Tim McCarthy
Fox’s Pizza, Guinness, the Cork and Kerry Irish Pub, Flood Brothers Disposal and Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 present the Hibernian Radio Hour as we continue on our First Responders Tour at The Cork and Kerry Pub on Western Avenue and this week we welcome 25 year Chicago Fire Department veteran, Captain Tim McCarthy. Tim attended St. Rita’s High School and worked as their soccer coach for 16 years as well as helping with the school’s fundraising. He joined the Fire Department in 1996 and currently works as Captain of the 5th district with Engine 101. Tim’s ancestors are from Ballyheigue in County Kerry and he talks about his trip to visit the Emerald Isle to discover his heritage. He chats to Houli about the importance of family with focus on his wife and 3 kids. Tim explains what pushed him to become a firefighter and like many of our previous guests, it stems from positive childhood interactions with firefighters. Tim takes us through a typical day on the job and the harmless rivalry between cops and firefighters. He has more than his fair share of stories from his time with CFD so far including a story about one of their firefighters falling through the stairs at a fire and some of the scary EMS calls they have been on. Tim has had a passion for painting for over 32 years and his family has an art gallery in Evergreen Park. He remembers pretending to be sick so he could stay at home from school to watch his mother paint and he discusses some of the challenges he faces when creating specific commissioned pieces for clients. Tim shares his retirement hopes to travel around the country in an RV attending art shows and festivals and talks about some of the commissioned paintings he has created to date. We are honored to have him on the show this week! Houli then brings us up to date on the latest obituaries and some of the upcoming local events. We the take a musical break with ‘Ón Mháthair’ by Ireland’s own Rainbow Starlight, Pól Brennan and Seán Mulrooney and that’s followed by a well-needed trip to ‘Houli-Town’ to end another great show!
