Jennifer “JJ” Walsh
Fox’s Pizza, Guinness, the Cork and Kerry Irish Pub, Madden Funds and Flood Brothers Disposal present the Hibernian Radio Hour as we continue on our First Responders Tour at The Cork and Kerry Pub on Western Avenue and this week we welcome 22 year CFD Paramedic, Jennifer “JJ” Walsh to the show. JJ lives in Mount Greenwood but grew up on the southside and attended Stagg Highschool. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in nursing homes and hospitals before taking an EMT class and falling in love with it. She then began volunteering at the Fire Department where her sister Beth also volunteered. JJ’s husband Vinnie is from Tipperary and she tells the story of how they met which included some matchmaking from JJ’s friend. They have 2 teenage kids, a girl and a boy. JJ just got her Nursing degree and is officially an RN. She’s currently “floating” around different stations on the southside but will return to Ford City in the near future. She has also been volunteering at Cassell Elementary School in Mount Greenwood for the last 10 years. JJ just took a trip to Ireland for Spring Break and she and Houli chat about what they got up to there as well as the trips they’ve both taken to the Emerald Isle in the past. JJ spent some time working in Englewood and delves into some of the best stories from her career so far including dealing with a mentally unstable female who was hallucinating. She discusses the wonderful partners she has had, her new title “Paramedic In Charge” and jokes about working 24 hour shifts – “I sleep with a lot of men!”. She explains what happened during her last busy shift in Chinatown and mentions the difficulty in dealing with the language barrier. JJ ends her insightful interview by sharing her hopes for the future and gives a shout-out to Ford City’s Engine 64. Houli then brings us up to date on some upcoming events including the fundraiser “Cycle Across Illinois” where Cops Cycling For Survivors will be riding. Be sure to come out and support them! Don’t forget – Houli’s annual trip to Ireland is coming up in October with the lovely Eimear Arkins so call Emma at 1-800-664-7474 to book your spot! then it’s over to recent obituaries followed by a well-needed trip to “Houli-Town”.
